Call for Participation:
Asao 2021 Virtual Meeting

The Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania (ASAO) warmly invites participants to sign up for sessions at our virtual meeting, which will be held from 4 February 2021 to 7 February 2021. ASAO is an international scholarly society dedicated to the anthropology of the Pacific which welcomes anyone interested in the lives of Pacific people, including scholars working in Native/Indigenous Studies, Pacific Studies, Cultural Studies, and other disciplines. Our meetings are small, intimate, informal, and cooperative.

We will use a video conferencing system similar to Zoom to hold synchronous panels in three time zones: Morning Pacific (9am to noon Suva time), Afternoon Pacific (1 to 4pm Suva time), and an Atlantic Rim zone (9am to noon New York City time).

To download a visual timetable of panel sessions, click here (organized by time zone) or here (organized alphabetically).

How to Sign Up For A Session:

1. Look over the session descriptions (listed below) and find a session you would like to participate in.
  • 'Participation' can mean giving a paper, being an active discussant in an informal session, or contributing as a member of a session in whatever way the session organiser would like you to.
  • 'Participation' does not normally mean sitting in on or listening to a sessions as an onlooker. If you just want to stick your head in to see what is happening, there is no need to sign up for a session.

2. Email the session organiser directly and express your interest in their session.
  • The sessions organisers are in charge of deciding who will participate in their session. Contact them to express your interest and they will see if it is possible to add you to their session.
  • Do not contact ASAO about submitting a paper, talk, or other form of participation. Like many small scholarly societies we are run by volunteers and do not have the time and energy to slot participants into sessions or create new sessions for participants to be on.
  • Please do not sign up to participate in more than one or two sessions this year, or else you may find that your sessions are running simultaneously and you are double booked.

3. Register for our conference at https://asaoannualmeeting.heysummit.com
  • Please consider becoming a member of the association by clicking here.
  • Please consider donating to the Pacific Island Scholars Award (PISA) to support attendance and participation by Pacific Islands scholars at ASAO meetings. Click here to support PISA.
